CLIMATE
Rainfall is around 500 mm. on average and enjoys a warm and mild Mediterranean climate with many hours of sunshine. However, given the wide variety of cultivation areas, the climatological conditions vary significantly from one area to another, with countless microclimates.
THE SOIL OF THE VINEYARDS
The soil is rich in phosphorus and low in potassium. It is an irregular terrain, with small hills from the shore of the sea to the mountain of Montserrat, with small valleys of the different rivers. In the areas of lower altitude the sandy terrain predominates and in the highest the calcareous terrain and the clay.
ZONE ALTITUDE
The altitude ranges from coast level zero to 800 m. above sea level in the upper subzone.
CONSTITUTION OF THE D.O
The Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin was founded in 1960. Viniculture began to represent a very important economic power in the Penedès, a series of companies began to be established that in their wine farms they made and bottled their wines and began to market them.
This led to the creation of the Penedès Designation of Origin, this foundation wanted to be simply the recognition of a very specific type of product, and also, offer the consumer a guarantee of a certain quality
CULTIVATED VARIETIES RED: Garnacha, Syrah, Monastrell, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Samson, Hare Eye. WHITE: . Chardonnay, Xarel·el, Malvasia de Sitges, Parellada, Riesling Gewürstraminer, Macabeo, Muscat of Alexandria. WINES The types produced are very varied given the great diversity originating in the different subzones such as: cavas, young whites, young reds and aged, as well as monovarietal wines, liquor, etc. There is also a great tradition of distilling wine alcohols. It is worth highlighting the production of the Sparkling Wine of the Penedès, born at the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1872. After the crisis caused by the phyloxera, the renewal of the vines allowed to experience a great evolution, making high quality cavas from the beginning.
